The Lantern Parade
The Opening Ceremony, Market Place, Melbourne
Carols from the towns Musicians
Fund Raising for Charity..
Brief: To take a few photos of the event. The opening ceremony and a few 'eye catchers'
Start: 5.45pm.
Summary:
I arrived early at the event and instantly met with another Village Voice Photographer
who was also there taking photos. We get on well but found that I deferred to him, not good as a press photographer I know. We both took images of the opening ceremony, he managed to get more individual shots than I did, he is well known as the Village Voice Photographer and has been doing the job for many years. I was relatively unknown and did not feel I could ask parents to take photos of their children without Village Voice ID.
I managed to get several images which worked well and the lantern parade, fund raising & band playing images were all included in the December Issue of the Village Voice.
I used my Canon 50d with the canon EX430 II flash gun, set on manual 1/125sec
In the very dark areas of the town it was a bit of an issue and some work in photoshop was needed, however, in the market place where the christmas lights were in abundance it wasn't such a problem.
I do feel that perhaps a lens with a wider aperture (low light - 1.2 /1.4mm) would have worked better in these conditions..
